Certified, vetted teachers
Classroom-experienced New Jersey educators, background-checked before their first session.
Our certified New Jersey teachers work with Montclair students at every level and across every subject, from elementary reading and math to middle school, high school honors and AP courses, and the SAT and ACT. We support families at both the public and independent schools in and around Montclair, and each plan is built around your child's actual classes, assignments, and goals.
Montclair's elementary and middle schools operate as a magnet system: rather than strict neighborhood assignment, families choose among schools built around themes such as global studies, Montessori, science and technology, and gifted and talented. It is one of the district's real strengths, and it also means students arrive at Montclair High School from noticeably different academic experiences. Ninth grade is where those paths converge, and where a tutor can quietly close whichever gaps a particular magnet path left open.
Montclair High School organizes some of its depth into small learning communities, including a STEM program, the Center for Social Justice, and the Civics and Government Institute, a program dating to 1997 in which students run their own congress under a student-written constitution. Layered over that are broad Advanced Placement offerings and the state's usual checkpoints, the NJSLA in grades 3 through 8 and high school and the NJGPA in eleventh grade, so a Montclair transcript can look very different from one student to the next.
The college testing calendar looks like the rest of New Jersey's: PSAT in October of junior year, a first SAT or ACT in winter or spring, prep often beginning the summer before. What differs in Montclair is the range of starting points, so our tutors begin with a diagnostic and your child's actual coursework rather than assumptions. Sessions run in your home anywhere in town or online, scheduled around rehearsals, athletics, and everything else Montclair students take on.

Our learning-disability tutoringAcross biology, chemistry, and physics, the same underlying walls recur.
What it looks like: Your child studies by memorizing and then loses points on questions that ask them to explain or apply. Modern science tests reward the reasoning, not the recall.
How our tutors help: Our tutors teach concepts inside the processes they belong to and practice explanation directly, which is exactly what the NJSLA-Science and the honors and AP exams reward. Understanding, not memorization, is the study strategy that matches the test.
What it looks like: Chemistry has stoichiometry, biology has genetics ratios, physics has algebra: the quantitative side ambushes students who expected a non-math class.
How our tutors help: We teach the specific math each science needs as a clean routine and repair the underlying algebra where it surfaces. Once the setup is automatic, the science stops being buried under arithmetic errors.
What it looks like: Lab reports and free-response questions ask for claim-evidence-reasoning, and students who can do the experiment cannot write the argument the rubric wants.
How our tutors help: Our tutors coach the explanation genre itself: make the claim, cite the data, justify it. We teach the structure while your child does the writing, the same standard we hold for essays.
What it looks like: Each unit feels like a fresh list of facts, so questions that connect topics, energy across systems, structure and function, fall apart.
How our tutors help: We draw the through-lines explicitly, energy, matter, cause and effect, so students see one connected subject instead of a dozen disjointed chapters. Those connections are precisely what the bigger test questions probe.
What it looks like: Honors and AP science move fast and test in unfamiliar formats, data clusters, free-response, particulate models, and strong students still stumble on the exam genre.
How our tutors help: Our tutors, experienced in AP Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, rehearse released exam questions with rubric review so students learn where points live. Familiarity with the format is the honest edge on exam day.
